Bharat Ram
Bharat Ram (Lala Bharat Ram) (October 15, 1914 – July 11, 2007) was an Indian industrialist. He came from a business family and his father, Sir Lala Shri Ram, had founded the company Delhi Cloth Mill, which was remained as DCM by Bharat Ram in 1980. He was a recipient of the civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan.
==Biography==
Born in Delhi, Ram completed his preliminary education as Modern School New Delhi, graduated in Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. After his graduation in 1935, he joined Delhi Cloth and General Mills Co Ltd (now DCM Ltd) as an apprentice and rose to the position of chairman and managing director in 1958.
Ram married Shiela in 1935 and they have three sons - Vinay , Arun and Vivek.
In 1990, the DCM family split after staying together for 90 years as differences had cropped up between Ram and his younger brother, Charat. (Their eldest brother, Murli Dhar, had died more than 40 years earlier in a plane crash in Pakistan.) Bharat Ram had set up Shriram Fibres (now known as SRF Ltd) in 1970. He also set up Shri Ram Fertilizers. He served on various government committees and wrote two books: Glimpses of Industrial India and From Istanbul to Vienna. Government also made him the chairman of Indian Airlines.
Ram is a passionate golfer built Indian golf and brought it structure. He was instrumental in building the Delhi Golf Club, which somewhat marked the golf scene in the capital region and for helping institute the Indian Golf Union, which for many years was the only golf body in the country. He brought the world's best players of the time and encouraged them to play on Indian soil.
Ram died in New Delhi hospital on 11 July 2007.
